A straight match wallpaper has a pattern that repeats at the same height across each drop. The design lines up straight across the wall, and the international wallpaper symbol for a straight match looks like this:

On many designer wallpapers you"ll see a number printed below this symbol – for example 64 cm – which shows the size of the vertical pattern repeat. Always check that all your rolls are from the same batch before you start hanging.
Step-by-Step: How to Hang Straight Match Wallpaper
- Check the label and pattern repeat. Confirm the wallpaper is a straight match and note the repeat (for example 64 cm). Make sure all rolls are from the same batch.
- Roll out the wallpaper and find the repeat. Unroll a length on a clean surface so you can see how the pattern repeats down the roll.
- Measure the first drop. Decide where you want the motif to sit on the wall and measure the wall height, adding at least 5 cm top and bottom for trimming.
- Cut the first drop. Cut through the paper in a neutral part of the pattern so joins are less visible.
- Cut the second drop to match. Roll out the next length beside the first and slide it until the pattern lines up perfectly, then cut.
- Cut the remaining drops. Repeat the process to cut all required drops, always matching the pattern to the previous piece and leaving extra at the top and bottom.
- Number the drops and the wall positions. Lightly mark the back of each drop (1, 2, 3…) and note where each one will hang on the wall so you keep the pattern in sequence.
- Hang the first drop on a true vertical line. Using a plumb line or spirit level, mark a vertical guideline and hang the first length so the edge follows this line exactly.
- Butt-join the next drops and match the pattern. Hang each drop edge-to-edge (never overlapping) and slide gently until the pattern matches perfectly across the seam.
- Trim the top and bottom. Once each drop is in place, smooth out bubbles with a paperhanging brush and trim excess paper at the ceiling and skirting.
When finished, the design should run in a continuous band around the room with the motif sitting at exactly the same height on every drop.
